Child Safety

Child Safety & Car Seats

Car seats and booster seats play an important role in protecting infants and children during a vehicle crash. Choosing the right seat for your child’s age, height, and weight—and using it correctly on every trip—can help keep them safe. Follow these important guidelines to select and install the appropriate car seat or booster seat and to know when your child is ready to transition safely to a seat belt.

Rear Facing Car Seat

Birth to age 12 Months

Children under age one should always ride in a rear-facing car seat.

1-3 Years

Keep your child rear-facing until they reach the seat manufacturer’s maximum height or weight limit. Then transition to a forward-facing seat with a harness and tether.

Forward Facing Car Seat

4 - 7 Years

Use a forward-facing seat with a harness and tether until your child reaches its height or weight limit. Then transition to a booster seat in the back seat.

Booster Seat

8 - 12 Years

Use a booster seat until the vehicle’s seat belt fits properly across your child’s upper thighs,  shoulder, and chest. Children should continue riding in the back seat for greater safety.

Seat Belt

Once Seat belt fits

Children no longer need to use a booster seat once seat belts fit them properly when the lap belt lies across the upper thighs (not the stomach), and the shoulder belt lies across the chest (not the neck).
